Surface-mounted sockets

Surface-mounted sockets are indispensable wherever power needs to be provided quickly and without major installation work. Whether in workshops, garages, basements or outdoor areas – they offer the flexibility required for electrical installations of all kinds. Unlike flush-mounted sockets, which require chasing into walls, surface-mounted sockets are fixed directly to the wall surface – clean, efficient and cost-effective. At WATT24 you'll find Schuko AP sockets in flat design, as multiple-outlet versions and in IP44 rating for outdoor use.

Advantages of surface-mounted sockets at a glance

  • Easy installation without chasing – Fitting a surface-mounted socket is straightforward: screw the housing to the wall, connect the cables, done. Ideal for retrofitting and upgrading existing installations.
  • Robust and durable – Many surface-mounted sockets are made from heavy-duty plastic that withstands even demanding conditions. They perform reliably in damp rooms and workshops.
  • Suitable for damp locations and outdoor use – Many models are splash-proof (IP44 or higher), making them suitable for bathrooms, utility rooms, garages and gardens.
  • Versatile applications – Whether for power tools, lighting or machinery – surface-mounted sockets provide a universal solution for indoor and outdoor areas alike.

Buying criteria for surface-mounted sockets

  • Protection rating (IP class) – IP20 is sufficient for dry indoor areas. For damp locations or outdoor use, at least IP44 is required; for fully exposed outdoor mounting, IP55 is recommended.
  • Flat design or standard housing – A flat surface-mounted socket is the right choice wherever a deep protrusion would be inconvenient: behind furniture, in drywall constructions or during renovation of living and office spaces.
  • Number of outlets – Single sockets for individual connections or surface-mounted multiple outlets for running several devices simultaneously – for example at workbenches or machine installation areas.
  • Material and build quality – For outdoor use, UV-resistant plastics are important to prevent discolouration and material damage caused by sunlight.
  • Design and colour – Modern surface-mounted sockets are available in various colours and finishes, blending into different environments both functionally and visually.
Surface-mounted or flush-mounted – when to use which? Flush-mounted sockets are the neater solution in new builds or full renovations. Surface-mounted sockets are the faster and more cost-effective choice for retrofits, commercial spaces and wherever opening the wall would be disproportionate.

Installing a surface-mounted socket – step by step

Fitting a surface-mounted socket is straightforward even for less experienced users. You will need:

  • Tools: screwdriver, drill, spirit level
  • Materials: socket, screws, wall plugs, cable
  • Safety measures: switch off the circuit, check fuses
  1. Select the mounting location and mark the drill holes.
  2. Drill the holes, insert wall plugs and fix the housing with screws.
  3. Connect the cables according to the instructions – observe correct colour coding (L, N, PE).
  4. Fit the cover and check that everything is secure.
  5. Switch on the power and test the socket.
Important notice: In Germany, connecting sockets to the mains is reserved for qualified electricians. The mechanical mounting of the housing is straightforward – but the electrical connection must be carried out by a certified electrician.

Surface-mounted socket outdoor – IP44 and IP55 for damp locations

In gardens, on terraces, in garages or at carports, specific safety and protection requirements apply. For outdoor use, only surface-mounted sockets with protection rating IP44 or higher should be installed. For fully exposed outdoor mounting without overhead cover, IP55 is recommended. Integrated hinged lids additionally protect the contacts against moisture and dirt when not in use.

Version Protection rating Feature Typical application
Standard surface-mounted socket IP20 simple wall mounting Workshop, basement, indoor
Flat surface-mounted socket IP20 / IP44 reduced installation depth Renovation, drywall, office
IP44 socket with hinged lid IP44 splash-proof Exterior wall, carport, garage
Multiple-outlet surface socket IP20 2- or 3-gang Workbench, machine area

FAQ: Surface-Mounted Sockets

What is the difference between surface-mounted and flush-mounted sockets?
With a surface-mounted socket, the housing is screwed visibly onto the wall surface – no chasing, no flush-mounted box required. A flush-mounted socket is recessed flush into the wall and requires an embedded back box. Surface-mounted sockets are quicker to install and particularly suited to retrofits, commercial spaces and older buildings.
What protection rating do I need for an outdoor surface-mounted socket?
For outdoor use, at least IP44 is required – protection against splash water from all directions. For fully exposed outdoor mounting without overhead cover, IP55 is recommended. Standard surface-mounted sockets with IP20 are suitable for dry indoor areas only.
What is a flat surface-mounted socket and when is it the right choice?
A flat surface-mounted socket has a reduced housing depth compared to standard surface-mounted enclosures. It sits closer to the wall and is ideal wherever a deep protrusion would be inconvenient – for example behind furniture, in drywall constructions or during renovation of living and office spaces.
Are surface-mounted sockets standards-compliant?
Yes – all surface-mounted sockets in the WATT24 range comply with DIN VDE 0620 (Schuko Type F, 16 A / 250 V~) and are approved for installation in Germany. For commercial use, installation by a qualified electrician is required.
Can I install a surface-mounted socket myself?
In Germany, connecting sockets to the mains is reserved for qualified electricians. The mechanical mounting of the housing on the wall is straightforward – however, the electrical connection must be carried out by a certified electrician.
