In paint shops in particular, it is essential that the light reproduces the surrounding colors as naturally as possible. Information about the color rendering of light is provided by the CRI (= color rendering index). Luminaires for professional, craft stores should have at least a CRI of >80. The best choice in areas where color plays such a special role as in paint shops are luminaires with a CRI of >90 to achieve optimal results.

Reflection and glare
Lighting in paint shops must not reflect on high-gloss surfaces. Uniform illumination is therefore of great importance. Furthermore, the luminaires must not dazzle under any circumstances, because this is not only perceived as annoying, but can also lead to accidents and hazards. Glare can be prevented by specially developed optics; but the mounting height and angle are also important prerequisites for safe working. To identify which luminaires are more or less dazzling, the degree of glare is measured in the so-called UGR value. For painting, touch-up and inspection work, we recommend a UGR value of 19.

EX-Protection according to ATEX-Directive
Depending on the design of your spray booth or paint booth, the lights must be explosion-proof. You can recognize this by the D and EX markings shown on the right. You can find a selection of explosion-proof lights in our store. We strongly advise against using diffuser luminaires in paint booths, as they are susceptible to deposits of paint residues. We also advise you to regularly remove paint residues from your luminaires and to install additional protection in the form of sheet metal or glass covers.

What illuminance must the lighting of a paint booth correspond to?

Depending on the activity, the specified illuminance levels of a paint shop are different. In the spray booth or paint booth, 1000 lux is specified. This is the only way to guarantee sufficient brightness to achieve excellent results.

The lights in a paint booth must be protected from fine dust and water so that the installed electronics are not damaged. IP protection of at least IP 54 is essential for long-lasting, robust lighting in your paint shop.

Depending on the design of the painting or spray booth, so-called EX lamps are mandatory. Fine mists and explosive gases pose a significant hazard when operating electronic equipment.

To ensure that colors and surfaces are reproduced as faithfully as possible and that no nasty surprises await you and your customers in daylight, the lighting in your paint shop should have a color rendering index of at least CRI>80. The higher this value, the more natural the light.
