ABB - History

The company Moyé und Stotz, elektr. Installationen was founded in Mannheim in 1891. In the first years of operation, Stotz himself put the first neon sign into operation - with his name on it. He built the circuit for this neon sign himself. Five years after the company was founded, the partner Moyé left and the company became Stotz und Cie. Elektrizitätsgesellschaft mbH.

In 1912, there were around 10 branches, including in Freiburg im Breisgau, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern. After the installation departments were sold to Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC), the rest was renamed Stotz und Cie. GmbH, Fabrik elektrischer Spezialapparate. In 1918, Stotz und Cie. eventually became a subsidiary of BBC.

In 1923, the development of automatic overload switches began, followed in 1928 by the manufacture of the S11 automatic circuit breaker. In 1930, Stotz-GmbH and Kontakt GmbH merged to form Stotz-Kontakt GmbH, which had been manufacturing explosion-protected devices since 1935.

In 1939, there was a fire in the warehouse in Neckarau (900 employees). This was followed by a decision to build a new factory in Heidelberg, where the assembly of sockets, rotary and toggle switches and circuit breakers began in 1943.

Production of the s 111 automatic screwdriver began in 1948.
In 1960, the plant in Rheinhausen went into operation with 73 employees. This was followed in 1964 by the opening of the Waibstadt plant, where final assembly work was carried out until 1975.
In 1969, after the acquisition of Busch-Jaeger, Busch-Jaeger Elektro GmbH was founded. In the following years, more and more business areas were integrated (automation technology, safety technology, switchgear, etc.).

In 2005, the equipment construction division moved to the company's own premises in Heidelberg, followed in 2009 by the industrial-technical and commercial divisions of the ABB Training Center (ATC). This enables the company to support trainees and technical and business management students at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University under one roof.
