In response to the increasing demand for cables and wires due to industrialization, the Lapp couple developed ÖLFLEX®, an innovative, industrially manufactured control cable with colour coding. Lapp - From an idea to world market leader
During the period of industrialization, the demand for cables and control lines grew enormously. However, the wiring of machines at that time proved to be time-consuming. All the wires had to be pulled into the hoses individually and by hand.
Oskar and Ursula Ida Lapp hit the ravages of time with their innovative idea: they invented and developed flexible, industrially manufactured control cables whose cores were already integrated and color-coded for easy connection.
The cables are oil-resistant and flexible, hence the name ÖLFLEX®.
U.I. Lapp KG is registered in 1959. Oskar Lapp is responsible for technology and sales, his wife takes care of the commercial side. Just a few years later, other companies are founded, including Lapp Kabelwerke GmbH.
In 1965, the company headquarters moved from the Lapps' home to its current location in Schulze-Delisch-Straße in Stuttgart.
In 1976, the first subsidiary, Ölflex Inc. is founded in the USA. Expansion abroad was still a novelty for medium-sized companies. But success proves the Lapps right.
In 1983, the second generation joins the company. Siegbert Lapp trades as S. Glaskabel GmbH and offers customer-specific connection systems - another successful branch of the family's business.
Oskar Lapp passes away in 1987. His wife and two sons continue to run the successful company. In 1992, the Oskar Lapp Foundation, which is dedicated to research into heart disease, is established in his memory. The research prize of the same name supports young people interested in science.
In the following years, the number of international subsidiaries increases and the Lapp Group grows with steady success.
In 2006, Lapp is one of the first companies where connection technology products can be purchased via an online store. In addition, Lapp develops from a component supplier more and more into a creator of system solutions.
In 2017, the grandchildren join the company as the third generation, which is still growing. One year later, the new company name “Lapp” is established uniformly for all parts of the company worldwide.
In 2022, the grandchildren's generation takes over the management of the company completely. Matthias Lapp takes over as CEO of Lapp Holding AG, Katharina Lapp joins the Supervisory Board. Lapp remains firmly in the hands of the family.
Today, Lapp is active in over 100 countries and is the international market leader in the fields of cable solutions and connection technology.
